Engineering Library: About us

History

 

The Engineering Library was established with the initiation of academic activities in the Faculty of Engineering however, library services for users commenced in May 2000. Initially, the library was located on the second floor of the Faculty's Administrative building. In 2015, it was relocated to a dedicated three-story building.

 

Vision

 

The Engineering Library operates in alignment with the university's vision and mission, as well as the objectives of the Faculty of Engineering and the Main Library as part of a larger system. The vision of the Engineering Library is "to be an excellent engineering library in Sri Lanka”.

 

Mission

 

The mission of the Engineering Library is "to support the University in producing quality engineers by providing access to essential information and knowledge sources, developing information literacy skills among patrons, and creating a conducive environment for learning and research within the library”.

Full membership with checkout facilities of the library is available to the following individuals:

  1. Registered undergraduate and postgraduate students of the University of Ruhuna
  2. Permanent academic staff members
  3. Permanent non-academic staff members

All students and staff members are required to register with the Engineering Library by submitting a completed application form, which is available at the library.

Postgraduate students who wish to use checkout facilities are required to pay a non-refundable deposit (currently Rs. 2000). Additionally, postgraduate students may need to renew their membership annually, in relevant cases, by paying Rs. 1000.

  • Students and staff are facilitated with reciprocal borrowing within their quota from the Main Library, subject to its policies, rules, and regulations.

 

  • Books borrowed under normal lending can be renewed online for another two weeks before the due date. Please log into your library account for details.

Opening hours of the library may vary according to the time of the academic year and requirements of faculty. Following is the opening hours operated currently at the Engineering Library.

Note that, only for the examination period, Library opening hours will be changed.

  • A fine of Rs. 1.00 per day will be imposed for each lending book that is not returned by the due date.
  • For reference books, a fine of Rs. 2.50 will be imposed on the first day, and Rs. 3.50 will be imposed for each subsequent day they are overdue.
  • All payments should be made through the Faculty's cashier (Shroff). Online payment options will be made available and announced.
  • The policy for recovering lost or damaged books is specified. Please contact the library for more information.
  • All members should register in advance when using the library.
  • During check-outs, users are required to present their Student ID, Student Record Book, or Staff ID.
  • Bringing personal belongings such as personal books and laptop bags (except for laptops and mobile phones) into the library is not allowed without prior permission.
  • Mobile phones and laptops should be used in silent mode or with headphones to avoid disturbing other library users.
  • Group discussions or meetings are not permitted in the normal reading area of the library.
  • When borrowing books from the library, please ensure you check for any damages. If you find any damage, please make a note of it with the relevant library staff member.
  • All personal materials should be taken with you when you leave the library.
  • Smoking and consuming food inside the library are strictly prohibited.
  • If you are not familiar with the index and shelving procedures, please refrain from placing books on the shelves. Instead, leave them on the nearest table or on the book trolley.
  • If you lose or damage a book or library material that you have borrowed, you should inform the librarian immediately. Otherwise, the system will continue the fine and recovery process, adding charges until you report it.
  • If the overdue charge exceeds Rs. 100, the system will automatically suspend the checkout facility.
