Ms. Sandya Gammanpila and Ms. Sakunthala Senevirathna, Senior Assistant Librarians of the University of Ruhuna, served as resource persons at a workshop on “The Effective Use of E-Resources for Final-Year Research” held on 24 July 2026 for final-year undergraduate students of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences & Technology, University of Ruhuna.
The workshop was organized by the Library Committee of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences & Technology to enhance students’ information literacy and research competencies in preparation for their final-year research thesis.
The programme combined presentations with hands-on practical sessions, enabling students to apply advanced literature searching techniques in real time. Participants learned how to identify appropriate keywords, develop effective search strategies, and use advanced search techniques such as Boolean operators, truncation, wildcard searching, phrase searching, and filters to retrieve relevant scholarly literature.
Students also received practical training on accessing and searching a range of scholarly databases and digital resources, including Google Scholar, SpringerLink, PubMed, OpenAlex, Research4Life, SSRN, DOAJ, SLJOL, and other subject-specific e-resource platforms. Through guided exercises, participants gained experience in locating high-quality research articles and other academic resources relevant to their research topics.
The workshop concluded with an interactive discussion and question-and-answer session, providing students with practical knowledge and confidence to effectively utilize electronic information resources throughout their research journey.
